Artificial intelligence is moving from answering questions to taking action. It books appointments, disputes charges, sends messages, makes purchases, and manages access. But how much control are Americans really willing to hand over? And what happens when AI gets it wrong?
Storable’s AI Audit, a national survey of 1,000 employed U.S. adults conducted in July 2026, explores how people use AI at home and work, which decisions remain off-limits, and what these changing expectations mean for companies deploying AI.

Americans are adopting AI as an agent, not just an advisor
The hand-off is already underway. In the past six months, 64% of Americans had AI complete a real action on their behalf. Half say AI is handling more of their lives than it did two years ago, and 37% expect to continue handing over more tasks during the next two years.
This shift includes customer service, appointments, purchases, personal messages, and recurring bills. It also often happens without disclosure: 44% of Americans have used AI during an interaction with a company without the other side knowing. For businesses, the customer experience now includes people acting through AI, even when the company cannot see it.
What do Americans refuse to let AI handle?
Trust is not determined by how advanced an AI system is. It is shaped by how reversible the outcome feels. Americans are most protective of decisions involving money, health, children, possessions, and access. Sixty percent will not let AI handle their money without a person involved; 49% say the same about health, and 45% about what they own.
Only 8% would hand every scenario in the survey over to AI without human involvement. When asked what matters most from a company using AI, 54% chose access to a human who can step in when needed, compared with 27% who prioritized AI that can complete the task rather than simply answer questions.
When AI fails, the company owns the outcome
Nearly one in four Americans say AI has already cost them time, money, or a missed opportunity. The business risk is even more immediate: 48% say one bad AI experience would send their business elsewhere, while 47% primarily blame the company that deployed the technology—not the AI itself.
That accountability extends to trust. Customers may welcome faster service, but they expect companies to understand the work, catch exceptions, and provide a clear human hand-off when something goes wrong.
Experience beats algorithms
When respondents chose between an AI-first company with the most advanced technology and an industry veteran with 20 years of experience that recently added AI, the veteran won nearly two to one: 36% to 20%. The result held across every generation, including Gen Z.
The message is straightforward: people are not choosing between technology and experience. They want technology grounded in experience. For companies handling money, access, reservations, or belongings, the most trusted AI strategy is not maximum automation. It is thoughtful delegation, visible safeguards, and people who remain accountable for the result.

What this means for businesses
AI can take the action, but the company still owns the outcome. The winners will be organizations that know what to automate, where a person must remain in the loop, and how to make the transition between AI and human support feel seamless.

It is a national survey of 1,000 employed U.S. adults about how Americans use AI, what they delegate, and what builds or breaks trust.
Do Americans trust AI to make high-stakes decisions?
Most want a human involved. People are particularly hesitant to let AI independently handle money, health, possessions, children, or access.
What is the biggest lesson for companies using AI?
Automation must be paired with accountability. Customers expect AI to complete useful tasks, a human to step in when needed, and the company to own the outcome.
