This blog dives into some key insights from our recent guide, Self-Storage Outlook Guide: Looking Ahead to 2025, where we surveyed over 1,000 U.S. tenants to uncover the industry’s most pressing questions: where is business headed—and how can operators stay ahead of the curve?
A Storage Boom on the Horizon?
The data we collected indicated a notable increase in people planning to move in the next 6-12 months. With 37% of respondents either planning or considering a move—up from 25% earlier in 2024—it’s clear that more mobility could fuel demand for storage operators. What’s more, an additional 23% of respondents answered “Maybe” when asked about a potential move, which could push the overall figure above 60%.
This surge in future moving activity is good news for storage operators. Whether moving for better job opportunities or relocating to more affordable areas, many will likely need storage solutions to bridge the gap between moves.
Evolving Regional Shifts and Opportunities
The South continues to be a top destination for US movers, with 40% of respondents planning to relocate there. States like Texas, Florida, and North Carolina are popular due to their lower cost of living and strong job markets. On the flip side, the Northeast, despite its population losses in recent years, is showing signs of a rebound, with 23% of movers planning to head there.
For self-storage operators, this regional trend presents opportunities for expansion and marketing efforts. Targeting areas with high mobility and a growing demand for temporary storage could help operators tap into these moving trends.
Customer Satisfaction and Selection Factors
In terms of consumer preferences, our survey revealed that customer satisfaction in the self-storage industry is strong, with 78% of respondents satisfied or very satisfied with their experience. However, there’s still room for improvement—especially when it comes to facility selection.
Price holds strong as the #1 factor customers consider when choosing a storage facility, with 83% citing it as a key consideration (a noticeable jump from earlier this year). Convenience and location also rank high, with 68% of respondents emphasizing the importance of accessible facilities.
Tech and Flexibility: The Future of Storage
In 2025, technology will play an increasingly crucial role in the self-storage sector. Tech solutions like online booking, virtual unit tours, and smart access systems will be essential in meeting these customers’ needs, especially those moving to a new region. The younger demographic is more likely to expect digital solutions that make remote managing simple.
Storage operators should also consider the growing demand for short-term storage. With 79% of customers needing storage for six months or less, flexibility in rental terms and ease of extension could be a game-changer for attracting and retaining customers.
