Augusta, ME councilors are handling a proposal to turn a former Kmart space into a self-storage facility. Some like the idea of turning a vacant and blighted former big-box store getting a new use. But most councilors objected because the project is close to the state Capitol complex. Some opposed developer Patriot Holdings’ plans to build several garage-style storage unit buildings in the parking lot between the 95,000-square-foot former Kmart building and Western Avenue.
